When one thinks of a man in the late decade of life, he might imagine an old man in front of the TV, walking with the house slippers, holding a cane, or maybe sitting on the front porch surrounded by nephews.
Yet, I believe no one has imagined a man on a heavy metal concert. Well, two German seniors decided they wanted to spend their precious time on such an event. In the rural district of Dithmarscher, Germany, two old men got an idea to escape from their nursing home and attend a heavy metal music festival.
The yearly Wacken Open Air music festival took place in Hamburg, about a 25-mile trek from their nursing home, and is considered one of the largest heavy metal festivals worldwide. It often features really popular bands like Judas Priest, Death By Sorry, Danzig, and Cannibal Corpse.
These two men joined more than 75,000 other heavy metal fans for the four-day festival.
According to the Washington Post:
“Peter Berndt, a spokesman for the Itzehoe police department, said the two men were thought to have made their way to the festival by foot and public transport, though it is unclear when exactly they arrived in Wacken and how much time they spent at the festival.”
We are sure they had the time of their lives there, but their caretakers noticed their absence and called the police. At 3 am, authorities found the seniors, a bit disoriented, and dazed.
Peter Berndt, a spokesperson for the Itzehoe police department, said:
“They were then taken to the medical tent on the festival site and were sent back by taxi at around 6:30 am. We had to explain to them why they had to go home — but in the end, they went back voluntarily.”
Police spokeswoman Merle Neufeld told public broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk:
“They obviously liked the metal festival. The care home quickly organized a return transport after police picked them up.”
Despite these two ones, this festival is often attended by numerous senior citizens, as this reckless adventure reignites a flame in their souls and leaves fantastic memories that last for a lifetime.
