Gout is a type of arthritis that causes pain that is similar to osteoarthritis, although there are some distinct differences.
It is caused by high uric acid build-up in the blood. Uric acid then accumulates in joints, thereby, causing inflammation with pain and discomfort.
Some natural remedies may be able to help. But, if your gout pain is very intense or sudden, consult your doctor before trying any of the remedies below.
Natural Home Remedies for Gout:
1. Applying Ice to the Affected Joints
Applying a cloth-covered ice pack to the affected joints can help in reducing gout-related inflammation.
You can try applying an ice pack wrapped using a thin towel for at least 10–15 minutes at a time to help relieve pain.
If gout is affecting the feet, that particular person can also use a pack of frozen vegetables that is covered with a washcloth, as this can drape more easily over the feet.
2. Drinking More Water
A person who has gout, can experience significant inflammation and swelling. One way to reduce swelling is by drinking more water.
Increasing fluid intake can help kick-start a person’s kidneys in order to release excess fluid, which can reduce swelling in a person suffering from gout.
Water is best, but other clear fluids, including herbal teas and broths are also good choices. People should avoid sodas and alcohol, which are high in purines.
But, anyone with kidney disease or congestive heart failure should consult their doctor before increasing their fluid intake.
3. Elevating the Affected Joints
Gout can cause swelling and pain, especially in the hands, feet, ankles and knees.
One way to reduce swelling is through elevating the affected joints. This encourages fluid and blood to move away from the joint, and back toward the heart.
Also, a person can use an ice-pack with elevation to reduce their gout symptoms.
4. Increasing Your Fish Consumption
Fish contains anti-inflammatory compounds that help in enhancing health overall. Some research has reported that some fish are especially helpful in reducing uric acid levels.
Authors of study in 2016 found that taking tuna extract helped in reducing the participants’ serum uric acid levels. But, the stduy participants did not have gout, therefore, more research is needed to confirm these results.
But, some nutrition websites list tuna as a high-purine food, therefore, some people may find consuming tuna worsens their symptoms.
Also, the Arthritis Foundation listed a number of fish that contain high levels of purines, such as sardines, anchovies, and cod.
5. Tart Cherry Juice or Cherries
As per a 2016 survey, cherries, whether sweet, sour, black, red, in extract form, as a juice, or raw; are a very successful and popular home remedy for many.
While a 2012 study and another study that same year, also suggest cherries may work to prevent gout attacks.
This research recommends at least 3 servings of any cherry form over a 2-day period, which was considered the most effective.
6. Topical Hot or Cold Application
Applying hot or cold water to inflamed joints may also be effective.
Opinions and studies on this are mixed. Soaking in cold water is the method most often recommended, while also considered most effective. Also, ice packs may work.
While soaking in hot water is only typically recommended when inflammation is not as intense.
Alternating cold and hot applications may also be helpful.
7. Warm Water Mixture With Lemon Juice, Apple Cider Vinegar, and Turmeric
Lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, and turmeric are frequently recommended for gout. Together, these ingredients make an excellent drink and remedy.
No strong research supports apple cider vinegar for gout, though studies show it may support the kidneys. Otherwise, research is very promising for lemon juice and turmeric for lowering uric acid.
Mix juice from 1 squeezed half lemon into warm water. Then mix with 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar and 2 teaspoons turmeric. Adjust to your taste. Drink 2-3 times daily.
